Version Reviewed-
DVD
Predator is one of those movies you expect to be something quite
special, but that turns out surpass all expectations.
Starring Arnold as Dutch, the ultra-tough CIA agent, sent with his team to
rescue hostages held in a jungle in a "Central American Country", the film
kicks off like a generic, brainless war movie, showing Dutch and his team
blowing apart a Guerrilla base where the (Now dead) hostages are held. It
soon becomes apparent, however, that this scene is required by the film as
a means of showing somebody, or something, exactly what these guys can
do...and whether they're worthy opponents...
And after killing
every last man in the whole base without a single casualty, the
'spectator' comes to the decision that these guys are going to be more
than a match .
As the team travels
through the harsh forest environment, they begin to see strange things
such as distorted light in the shape of a man, and skinned bodies hung up,
dangling down from trees. And then the killing starts.
Predator is very
much a movie built on witty, but very naff, dialogue, extreme tension
(especially towards the end) and the fact that the whole thing is
incredibly entertaining.
So what makes it so entertaining?
Well, as I've already said, the dialogue can sometimes raise a smile, and
the characters are so easy to distinguish apart. They all have their own
ways, habits and phrases, but just as you get to know and like a
character, he gets blown apart by the Predator.
Of course, Arnie isn't the real star of the movie. The real 'person' you
see this movie for is the Predator himself. Seeing him towering above
Arnie at the end of the film shows just how powerful this guy is, and the
last ten or twenty minutes where Arnie pits himself alone against the ugly
brute are the best in the film.
Predator is one of those movies that doesn't require a super-complex plot
or insanely well-acted characters; it's just a fun action movie.
In conclusion, this is a movie that manages to entertain to the highest
degree, and therefore is worth watching over and over until you know the
script off by heart. And, for a measly £23, you can get the 'Special
Edition', which contains a whole DVD full of extras, as well as the movie
of course, and a free Aliens VS Predator 2 demo for PC.
